Valacich Washington State University. USA. 10:00-10:15 Coffee break 10:15-11:45 Tutorial Continuation : "Group Support Systems: Technology, Research, Use and Evolution" 11:45-12:00 Closing Ceremony. Favela's keynote speech abstract -------------------------------- Capture and Retrieval of Group Memory in Network Organizations Network organizations are made of small, heterogeneous, product oriented teams. In these organizations, the specialization of knowledge that has characterized functional hierarchied can be lost as the functional units where this expertise was created and shared is dismantled. The preservation and dissemination of expert knowledge thus becomes a major issue to be addressed by these organizations whose competitive advantage depends on this specialization. In this talk we present an approach to the management of organizational memory based on the implementation of groupware systems that support work processes and their retrieval by guiding people in their exploration of organizational records that are relevant to their problem at hand. We will also discuss our current research efforts in this area. Valacich's tutorial abstract ---------------------------- The State of the Art in Group Support Systems Research and Practice There is a rapidly growing interest in the use of information technology to support groups. Over the past few years, more than fifty universities have established GSS research programs, and many more organizations have installed GSS software. The number of books, research papers, popular press articles, and conferences focusing on GSS has also increased dramatically. This tutorial will provide an overview of the current state of the art in GSS research and practice, with a glimpse into the future. The tutorial will cover a number of key topics, including: - GSS Technology - Useful Theories - What We Know - What We Don't Know - How GSS is Being Applied in Organizations and Where it is Going --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPONSORS -------- Comision Nacional de Investigacion Cientifica y Tecnologica (Conicyt-Chile) Sociedad Chilena de Ciencia de Computacion (SCCC-Chile) Red Iberoamericana de Tecnologia de la Informacion (CYTED-RITOS) Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores (INESC-Portugal) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROGRAM COMMITTEE CHAIRS ------------------------ Encarna Pastor (Co-Chair) (Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Spain) Nuno Guimaraes (Co-Chair) (INESC, Portugal) PROGRAM COMMITTEE MEMBERS ------------------------- Manfred Bogen (GMD Bonn, Germany) Marcos R.S. The region has many tourist attractions, including other nearby lakes, Mt. Osorno and other volcanoes, and the Petrohue river and rapids. About 25 kms. away is Puerto Montt, an interesting city with excellent seafood and access to the exotic Chiloe islands. During the event, we will try to do some sightseeing, but to have sufficient time to explore the area we recommend a 3 or 7 days visit. On a 3 day visit, you may go to Chiloe and enjoy its peculiar culture and landscapes. On a 7 day visit, you may take a ship that goes to San Rafael fjord for a week-long cruise (departures: Saturday). If you enjoy skiing, you may also go to the nearby Antillanca slopes, which may still have reasonable amounts of snow. Access: some daily flights from Santiago to Puerto Montt airport (Ladeco, Lan-Chile, National). This airport serves both Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt. Also, you may take an excellent sleeper bus (Varmontt, leaving Santiago in the evening and arriving at Puerto Varas at dawn). There is also a train, but it is not recommended. Climate: Spring will be starting, so do expect some rain (hopefully, not all the time!). Temperatures: from 2-5 degrees C (36-41 degrees F) to 10-15 degrees C (50-60 degrees F). PREMISES -------- The workshop will be held at "Hotel y Cabannas del Lago" (****). A block of rooms has been reserved and special rates have been negotiated. However, you need to make your own reservations according to your schedule. All rooms have a lake view and rates include continental-buffet breakfast. When making your reservation, mention the CRIWG acronym. Single room US$ 55 Executive double US$ 63 Junior suite US$ 78 Triple room US$ 78 These rates apply to foreign, non-resident visitors.
